A story of a group of “African children” (no region cited) being generous to one another showed up on my dash recently. Beneath it was a series of comments saying North American children specifically could learn from how well African children behaved.
Stereotyping is still stereotyping, even if the trait you’re applying seems positive. Trying to bundle an entire continent under a generalization doesn’t serve them very well.
How should our minority go about reaching equality?
By ostracizing and condemning EVERYONE not within our minority!
You find this a lot on every social activist blog, in every circle. Guess what? POC Equality can have white supporters. Fat Acceptance movements can have thin supporters and LGBQT Equality can have some straight supporters. In fact, it probably has to if you want it to actually become as wide spread as you hope it will.
Saw this word-for-word on a blog made for pointing out instances of white privilege, which not twenty posts earlier said that an example of white privilege is being able to stereotype POC as giving crazy names to their kids.
They’re a POC themself.
But stereotypes are okay if it’s for JUSTICE!!1111ELEVENTY
I keep on seeing Christians getting bashed as being homophobic and really its getting annoying because the truth of the matter is that Hassidic Judaism and Islam are wayy more homophobic then Christianity is! It actually says in their bibles that gays should be stoned and killed, and the women in those religions are treated as sexual objects that have to cover up. Yet somehow if you try to say any bit of criticism to these religions you get labeled as “racist” just because they’re religions of color!
>knows that Judaism and Islam are even worse
… So that means that the POC who don’t agree with Obama politcs in the Midle East are internalizing racism?
I recently read a story about a student who was being harassed at his college for being heterosexual, and most of the comments were very heterophobic, saying that it “never happens”, that “like this kid didn’t lie, yeah right. Life is never like this,” etc. etc.
Why can’t people just admit discrimination happens to everybody because everybody’s a jerkwad?
I support using gender-neutral language in both instances, and I need someone to educate me on why this double standard exists, because I’m confused as hell.
It’s actually quite sad how many times I’ve seen this happen. Sorry it’s worded kind of weirdly.
