#OCCUPYWALLSTREET Protest Arrests; Local NY News Crew Hit by Mace, Baton

The protests on Wall Street continue to grow. The rallies and their participants are showing no signs of slowing down. Wednesday evening, crowds surged past barriers and NYPD officers moved in to contain the protesters. By many accounts, mayhem broke out.

Officers swatted protesters with batons and sprayed them with mace, according to video from the scene.

Fox 5 photographer Roy Isen was hit in the eyes by mace, and Fox 5 reporter Dick Brennan was hit by what he believes was an officer’s baton.

Both were all right and continued to cover the protests and arrests.

Cops arrested dozens of protesters, but the final tally was not known.

The young woman being arrested in some of the pictures is also seen in this video, saying she was arrested for asking them not to manhandle her. One of the young men in the pictures is seen in this video, and although you can’t tell from the photos, the video seems to show the police taking him down to the ground even though he was not resisting arrest. Video says he got a concussion but it’s hard to tell from the footage, though obviously being taken down like that is painful as fuck and he certainly looks discombobulated afterwards.

A young man of color arrested in Union Square earlier today doing literally nothing but crossing the street.

I am fucking shaking with anger. This video shows Union Square earlier today. Clearly there is a protest but the area immediately surrounding the guy with the camera is just observers and people milling around. Watch the guy in the red shirt. From the vimeo link:

As you can see at around 0:30, a young man in a red shirt, Glenn Daniels Jr, is walking near the sidewalk with hundreds of other protestors. The crowd was attempting to cross the street to continue the march south down Broadway from Union Square. Daniels is peacefully walking with a water bottle, not committing any crime. At 0:35 he is approached by an NYPD officer and pushed towards the sidewalk. At 0:38 a senior police officer in a white shirt quickly approaches and grabs Daniels and another young man with a beard and backpack. The lighter skinned man is let go, but Daniels is arrested. The remainder of the video shows NYPD officers cuffing and detaining Daniels.

This is horrifying.

By the way, the Occupy Wall Street arrests are now on the homepage of the New York Times.
